Molecular Level

At the molecular level, the human body consists of smaller molecules (such as glucose and amino acids) that in turn make up macromolecules (such as DNA and proteins). These macromolecules are often referred to as “the building blocks of life".

The molecular level also includes the substances and structures involved in synaptic transmission: neurotransmitters, their synaptic receptors, and all of the enzymes involved in the associated biochemical reactions.

The scientific disciplines that deal with the molecular level of organization include biochemistry, pharmacology, and molecular biology.

Molecules are not really the lowest level of organization in the human body. Molecules themselves are composed of atoms, which in turn are composed of elementary particles, but the molecular level is the lowest one that we look at on this site.
