Cellular Level (the neuron)

The cell is the smallest functional unit of every living organism. The simplest organisms, such as bacteria, have only one cell.

The human nervous system consists of billions of specialized cells called neurons, which carry and transmit bioelectrical and biochemical signals. On this site, when we talk about the cellular level, we are describing the events that take place in these neurons.

To do so, we show how a neuron’s form and function are intimately related. We also describe the various kinds of circuits in which neurons are interconnected, ranging from simple reflex circuits comprising just a few neurons to complex neural networks comprising several hundred.

The sciences dealing with the cellular level of organization include cell biology and histology.
