Memory: Our First Reflex

Ask some friends to fill in the blank in the following statement: Bill’s mother has three sons: Moe, Larry and ___. Most people will answer “Curly”, even though the right answer is … Bill! This shows how, when faced with a problem, the first thing we often do is search for a solution in our memory. And if that doesn’t work, we try to draw connections among the things we already know. Logic comes much later in the process.
